Before the Interview
Secrets of Success
Small details make a big difference on your big day.
What to wear?
- Dress business casual — like a respectful job interview.
- Choose calm, neat colors. Avoid sportswear, slogan t-shirts, and hats.
- Clean, tidy clothes show respect for the officer and the occasion.
How to stay calm?
- Breathe deeply: inhale 4 seconds, hold 4, exhale 4. Repeat 5 times before entering.
- If you do not understand, say: Excuse me, could you please repeat the question?
- If you need a moment, say: Just a moment, please.
- Remember: the officer is doing a job, not trying to trick you.
Documents checklist
- Bring: Green Card, passport, interview appointment letter, and state ID or driver's license.
- Bring any extra documents listed in your appointment letter.
- Leave in the car or at home: your phone if possible, food, drinks, and sharp objects.
Interview day, step by step
- Arrive 30 minutes early — never late.
- At security: take off your belt and empty your pockets, like at the airport.
- In the waiting room: sit quietly and calmly until your name is called.
- The officer will ask you to raise your right hand and swear to tell the truth.
Body language and manners
- Greet the officer: Good morning, officer. A light smile is enough.
- Sit up straight and keep comfortable eye contact — it shows honesty and confidence.
- Answer only what is asked. Do not volunteer extra information.
- At the end, say: Thank you, officer. Have a nice day.
